When talking about domain transfers it's important to distinguish between transferring a domain name and transferring the DNS. This article is about transferring the registration of the domain itself, i.e. who you pay your domain renewal to.

Transferring the registration of a domain doesn't change anything to do with the DNS. However it's normally a good idea to get the DNS moved prior to transferring the domain registration as some registrars will disable any DNS zones once the domain is transferred.

We have details on how to use Nimbus to manage the DNS for your domain here:

Transferring a domain ending .uk to Nimbus

The transfer process for a .co.uk domain or any domain ending in .uk (.co.uk/.uk/.org.uk etc) is done by changing the domains IPS tag. The IPS tag simply dictates who the registrar is for your domain (who you pay the renewal fee too).

To transfer your .uk domain to Nimbus, the first thing you need to to is place a transfer order.

To do this log into the Nimbus client area using the following link: https://youraccount.nimbushosting.co.uk/clientarea.php

Once logged in click on "Domains" > "Transfer Domains to US"

Enter the domain name you would like to transfer to us in the "Domain Name" field.

As .co.uk domains do not have an auth code, leave the "Authorisation Code" box empty

Then click "Add To Cart"

Then follow the checkout process to check out. Don't worry there's no charge for transferring a .co.uk domain to us. We just need to create an order so that the domain gets added to our system.

Now that you have placed a domain transfer order with you please change the IPS tag with the current registrar to:

NIMHOST

The change is instant, so once they change the TAG we will have control of it.

Transferring other domains to Nimbus (.com, .org, etc.)

The transfer process for a .com domain (or anything that doesn't end in a .uk for example .com/.net/.org/.co) involves a number of steps.

Firstly you’ll need to get the domain unlocked with the current registrar, this is a security measure to stop your domains being transferred away without your permission.

Next you will need retrieve the Auth code (Also known as a transfer code) from the current registrar and make a note of this as you will need it later.

Like with the .co.uk domains, to transfer your .com domain to Nimbus, the first thing you need to to is place a transfer order.

To do this log into the Nimbus client area using the following link: https://youraccount.nimbushosting.co.uk/clientarea.php

Once logged in click on "Domains" > "Transfer Domains to US"

Enter the domain name you would like to transfer to us in the "Domain Name" field.

Important - Make sure you enter your domains authorisation code (Transfer code) into the "Authorisation Code" field. If you are not sure what the auth code is for your domain you will need to ask your current registrar for this information.

Then click "Add To Cart"

Then follow the checkout process to check out. For .com domains we have to renew the domain at the point of transfer. This gets added onto the existing renewal date. The cost of this will be shown when you create an order..

Once the transfer order has been placed we will initiate the domain transfer. An email will get sent to the admin contact for your domain so it's worth making sure the admin contact email address on your domain is up to date and set to something you have access to.

Transfers of .com domains typically take 3-7 working days.
